The Morning After

Monday, 0910

Josh Konnely once again walks the streets of New Orleans. He is wearing a New Orleans Saints Super Bowl Championship hat and t-shirt with black nylon warmup pants. He is carrying the sports bag from the night before, presumably with the World Heavyweight Championship belt again inside.

"Four and a half years after Hurricane Katrina devastated Louisiana and its Superdome, we awake in a city and a world where the New Orleans Saints are World Champions."

Josh stops outside the Louisiana Superdome. Across the street is the New Orleans Arena, where Strike Towers will swarm the home of the Hornets on Wednesday night.

"The irony is that I have come to New Orleans to defend my SFT World Championship against the man who calls himself Saint Jude. Unlike the NFL's Saints, Jude has been a World Champion before in Strike Towers. Which, in truth, is more of a sad statement about the state of SFT than any actual measure of Saint Jude.

Condescension aside, Saint Jude is a man that presents meager means and meager skills as his norm or his average. However, he is a man who will at times and under proper motivation will rise to the occasion, rise to the challenge, and play up to the level of his opponent- to borrow a phrase from the sports media.

It was two years ago that the 'lowly' Saint Jude stepped up to defeat the 'legendary' future Hall of Famer Kyle Murphy for the World Heavyweight Championship. It was almost a miracle. Nobody believed it could happen. But Saint Jude elevated his level of performance, and perhaps Kyle Murphy was less than himself. These two factors enabled Saint Jude, for one night, to be the better man and get the win for the championship gold.

Do you hope that lightning will strike twice for you, Jude? And in the same city where it has already struck for Drew Brees and the NFL's resident Saints? It would truly take a miracle this time around.

As I mentioned last night, I am surely no saint. I am a man who takes delight in bringing pain and suffering- rather than comfort and love- to the weak, the unclean, the prideful, and the comfortable. Christ is said to have come to 'comfort the conflicted and to conflict the comfortable.' I comfort no one. I will forgive those who seek forgiveness, but I will strike down with great vengeance those who are too proud and arrogant to realize they need it.

Saint Jude, you have committed no sin against me personally, aside from perhaps coveting what I have here in this bag. From your confession, however, you omitted one clear short-coming. You omitted the confession to the one sin from which all those others were born: you didn't confess to the deadly sin of PRIDE. It is pride that makes you drink from the bottle and relapse into the weakness of addiction. You feel that you are so low that the only thing that can lift you back up is the creature that comes in 80 or 90 proof. You pass up seeking the salvation of the Lord for the imagined salvation of the bottle. You turn your back on your one true father, yet you confess the sin to the false father of the Catholic church.

You confess to wanting a woman and lusting after her. Is it not a man's pride that makes him covet the flesh?

You confess to not going to your mother's funeral. Why did you make that choice? Because it would bruise your ego to give into public sadness. But a funeral is not so much a service for the deceased as a comfort to the living.

Jude, confess not your sins to the figurehead of the church. Lay them before your God, in the name of Jesus the Christ, and ask Him for His forgiveness. He will always be there for those who desire Him.

Our time is almost up, Jude. The time for words has ended. The time for action is fast approaching. Saint Jude, pray to your Father for the forgiveness only He can give. You shall get none from me, or from any man. Only He can save you."

Josh once again pulls the SFT World Heavyweight Championship from his Saints bag, and places it over his shoulder in an almost symbolic act. He cracks a rare smile before turning and walking away.

Fade to blackness.

Another mission
The powers have called me away
Another time
To carry the colors again
My motivation
An oath I've sworn to defend
To win the honor
Of coming back home again
No explanation
Will matter after we begin
Another dark destroyer that's buried within
My true vocation
And know my unfortunate friend
You will discover
A war you're unable to win

I'll have you know
That I've become...

Indestructible
Determination that is incorruptible
From the other side
A terror to behold
Annihilation will be unavoidable
Every broken enemy will know
That their opponent had to be invincible
Take a last look around while you're alive
I'm an indestructible master of war

Another reason
Another cause for me to fight
Another fuse uncovered
Now, for me to light
My dedication
To all that I've sworn to protect
I carry out my orders
With not a regret
A declaration
Embedded deep under my skin
A permanent reminder
Of how we began
No hesitation
When I am commanding the strike
You need to know
That you're in for the fight of your life

You will be shown
How I've become....

Indestructible
Determination that is incorruptible
From the other side
A terror to behold
Annihilation will be unavoidable
Every broken enemy will know
That their opponent had to be invincible
Take a last look around while you're alive
I'm an indestructible master of war

I'm...

Indestructible
Determination that is incorruptible
From the other side
A terror to behold
Annihilation will be unavoidable
Every broken enemy will know
That their opponent had to be invincible
Take a last look around while you're alive
I am indestructible (indestructible)

Indestructible
Determination that is incorruptible
From the other side
A terror to behold
Annihilation will be unavoidable
Every broken enemy will know
That their opponent had to be invincible
Take a last look around while you're alive
I'm an indestructible master of war
